About this place
Open the door to Shanty, woven quietly into the townscape of Adachi Ward's Senju, and you are greeted by calm, unhurried time and the rich aroma of roasting coffee beans. This modest kissaten has been cherished in the neighborhood for many years. Run by an elderly couple offering warm, considerate hospitality, it offers a gentle retreat from the surrounding city bustle.
For a leisurely start to the day, the morning service centering on thick-cut toast is a perennial favorite. Toast soaked with melting butter arrives alongside yogurt and a drink—an unassuming combination that leaves you thoroughly satisfied early in the day. Pairing it with their house-roasted blend, balanced in richness and acidity, is an easy choice, though milk tea or straight black tea makes an equally comforting accompaniment.
When an afternoon pause calls for something sweet, look to the house-baked cake set prepared on-site. The lineup shifts depending on the day: airy chiffon cake, pound cake lifted by the crisp tartness of apple, dense gâteau au chocolat, and rich cheese tart all make appearances. They sit comfortably alongside hot coffee with just the right note of bitterness, or a clean, refreshing glass of iced coffee.
The snug seating area maintains a peaceful atmosphere, nicely suited for reading alone in quiet or settling into an easy conversation with a companion. Note that payment is cash-only, so it is best to have bills and coins ready before you take your seat.
